How to Clean Headphones and Earbuds Properly

By HyFa Published · Updated

Headphones accumulate sweat, skin oils, earwax, and dust. Regular cleaning extends their lifespan, maintains hygiene, and prevents sound degradation from blocked drivers or deteriorated pads.

How to Clean Headphones and Earbuds Properly

Over-Ear Headphones

Ear pads: Remove if detachable. Wipe pleather pads with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap. For velour pads, use a lint roller to remove debris, then lightly brush with a soft dry brush. Do not submerge velour pads in water.

Driver mesh: Use a dry soft brush to remove dust. Do not insert anything into the driver opening. Compressed air at low pressure (held at a distance) can dislodge particles.

Headband: Wipe with a damp cloth. For leather headbands, apply leather conditioner every few months.

Cable: Wipe with a slightly damp cloth. For sticky residue, use a small amount of isopropyl alcohol on a microfiber cloth.

In-Ear Monitors and Earbuds

Ear tips: Remove silicone tips and wash with warm soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry completely before reattaching. Replace foam tips (Comply) when they lose shape or become discolored.

Nozzle/sound bore: The mesh screen over the nozzle traps earwax. Use a small brush (many IEMs include one) or a dry toothpick to gently remove buildup. Never push debris into the nozzle.

Driver housing: Wipe exterior with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Avoid moisture near the sound bore.

Wireless Earbuds (AirPods, etc.)

Earbud speakers: Apple recommends a dry, lint-free cloth for the speakers. Use a dry cotton swab for the microphone and speaker meshes. Do not use sharp objects.

Charging case: Clean the outside with a lint-free cloth. For the charging contacts, use a dry soft brush. Remove any debris from the Lightning or USB-C port with a dry, anti-static brush.

For AirPods Pro specifically, clean the silicone tips with water and dry thoroughly. See our [INTERNAL: apple-airpods-pro-2-review] for care-specific tips.
